More than 100 years of Dong Xuan Market (in Hanoi)


Dong Xuan Market was born in 1889. It is the crowded shopping area of the capital for more than 100 years.

According to the records, the Dong Xuan market was before 1888, in the old location is south of To Lich river flows from Hang Ca street along the Ceramic Lane. Around 1889, when the To Lich and Thai Nguyen lakes were filled, the French planned and put all the goods into empty land in Dong Xuan ward (nowadays), forming Dong Xuan market. The first day of operation, the market meeting outdoors, covered with leaves like the old two markets.



In this picture, the market was called the Grand Marché by the French, but Dong Xuan is still a popular name mentioned by the capital.


After being officially built in 1890, the market has five arches and five bridges are 52 meters long, 19 meters high, 25 meters wide. The entire market area is about 6,500 m2. The façade features French architecture with 5 sections of triangular holes such as honeycomb, roofed iron.



After completion, the market only meeting two days a session, but later due to the need of economic development trade, the market is held daily from morning to night. The merchandise was sold in various sizes, from agricultural products, foodstuffs, vegetables and fruits to French, Chinese and Indian fabrics. When the nationwide war broke out in 1946, the market Dong Xuan is located in Inter Zone One and becomes a fighting point. There were battles between the French troops fighting against French troops.

Around 1990, the market was rebuilt, breaking two rows on either side, three rows between three floors. The two sides of the door are also unloaded, but still hold the two columns out. In 1994, Dong Xuan market was destroyed by fire, almost all of the fire in the market. This is the largest market fire in Hanoi so far.


In 1995, the Dong Xuan Market was rebuilt with an investment capital of VND68 billion. Three floors with a total floor area of ​​nearly 14,000 m2 with about 2,000 stalls. The market currently has a trading area, sales floors, stairs, walkways with three front entrances, three entryways, two hip entrances, two outdoor staircases, five stairs upstairs and an elevator system.


Over 100 years, the market still exists associated with many important milestones of the country. Not only the wholesale market, the market also contains many cultural values, spiritual people of Ha Thanh.



Dong Xuan Market is one of the largest markets in the capital, attracting many domestic and foreign visitors. Recently, on 9/4, many small traders have been banned before the rumors of building new Dong Xuan market, but the People's Committee of Hoan Kiem district said this information is not true.
