Visit Heritage house in Hanoi’s Old Quarter.

Visit Heritage house in Hanoi’s Old Quarter.

During a walk around Hanoi, I was accidentally fortunate to visit an old house. House number 87 Ma May. A neat house between Hanoi moss walls. The house, the place to keep memorabilia and living space for a while, made it impossible for visitors to leave.

Hanoi has a neighborhood called the old town. But strictly speaking, the houses here are much less older than ancient ones, they were built mainly during the French colonial period. Of course, whether old, they are all beautiful, they are part of an unforgettable memory of Hanoi.

The house number 87 Ma May was built in the period of 1890. If it is calculated, it is over 100 years old. This house is one of 14 remaining houses in Hanoi built during that period.

In the old days this house was private, and also experienced a few master lives. With the sponsorship of Toulouse City Council (France), the house has been preserved by the Old Town Management Board since 1999. Currently, it is open to visitors with a very pleasant price ticket amount, about 10 thousand dong.

In the past, the house was built for the purpose of living and business ground. Before 1945, the owner of the house lived here and sold rice. After 1945, they sold it to a Chinese family, who were selling Chinese medicine. However, in 1954, the house once again changed owner when the Chinese family migrated to the South, leaving the house under the management of the State. At that time, there were 5 families living in this house.

From 1999 up to now, the house does not have too many changes with a model house of a traditional house in the Old Quarter.

At first glance, this house makes people think a lot about the houses in Hoi An with yellow paint, brown wood. But if you find out there are many differences.

The house features traditional tubular architecture with many layers of houses. In the middle of the house there is a courtyard for light and air. The place where the bonsai is displayed. In the evening, people enjoyed tea, observed the moon. The house is made up with of lots of wood, from tile roofs to trusses, staircases and other subtle decorative motifs.

Over 100 years of existence on Hanoi land, the house of 87 Ma May witnessed many sad and happy events here. From the development of the city to the hours of dangerous war. Not only that, that house is also a strong milestone for the formation of historical architecture of Hanoi Old Quarter.

This place holds so many memorabilia. -Photo: I moved

To this day, the house of 87 Ma May has many different changes compared to the early days of construction. The architectural features and characteristics are still the same. In the house, there are also many home owners' antiquities as well as ancient living things.

Every time i visit that house, every time the emotion comes up. It is not just pleasure but also thoughts and experiences: Oh, it turns out that in the old days, Hanoi people lived like that. Oh, it turns out the tools have very elegant animals. Oh, it turns out that the old-fashioned way is considered so important, so meticulous.

I come here and relive with what used to exist in that place. We see that Hanoi has so many interesting things that not everyone knows to find out. Ma May is small between so many other narrow streets of the Old Quarter, in the heart of Hanoi is changing day by day. House 87 Ma May quietly, calmly so that people want, lovers find themselves.
