Phu Van Lau - the beauty of Hue architecture

Located on the main road of Hue Citadel, in front of Ky Dai and behind Nghinh Luong Dinh, this is a unique architectural monument in the ancient capital city. Phu Van Lau is considered the symbol of Hue ancient capital.

Phu Van Lau means the literary floor, which was built in 1819 under King Gia Long. Building on the square, the ground of this passage slightly swept forward. The ground is paved with marble tiles in Bat Trang, but now the yard has been replaced with brick-and-mortar tiles made of cement.

The building has two floors consisting of 2 sets of overlapping roofs, large and small. The roof of the ancient architecture roof tile glaze gold is the type of tile used to roof the palace located in the main axis in the Hue Citadel. This project has all 16 round wooden columns painted dark red. Four large columns in the middle run continuously from the bottom to the top floor, each column is set on a pedestal. The stones are carved into two levels below the square.

Phu Van Lau also has a system of rails separating the steps between the front, left and right. The two sides of the path have no steps and the steps have the level of the dragon. From the lower floor, go up the stairs with a wooden staircase. On the upper level all 4 sides are set up the picture frame silk. On the front and behind the rounded windows, the left and right sides of the windows are symmetrical. Around the outside is a system of wooden carpets that are elegant and graceful.

On the window front hung gold lacquer gold lacquer, decorated with long-tailed leathery leaves. The two sides of the front put two bronze bows directed at each other. In the reign of King Thieu Tri, two stone steles were inscribed with the words "lower thimble". On the right side, Phu Van Lau also carved a poem.

Not only the post office, Phu Van Lau is the place where many activities of the court. Since 1821, after the batch was transferred, the list of doctoral dissertations was listed here. Because of such a solemn personality, the two sides have two stone slabs, "lower leg" to remind everyone when passing Phu Van Lau must "tilt the horse down".

In 1829 this place had a fight between elephants and tigers in front of the floor to show King Minh Mang. On the occasion of the week, the five weeks of King Minh Mang also have many other fun held here. Later in the reigns of King Thieu Tri, Tu Duc also kept that same number of days of his life.

King Thieu Tri had mentionned the Perfume River and Phu Van Palace as one of the 20 beautiful scenes in Hue. In 1843 Thieu Tri set up a brew house on the right hand side to carve the poetic Huong Giang (early boat ride on the Perfume River). For nearly 200 years, Phu Van Lau was restored about 10 times. Although renovated many times, the monument still retains the unique character of Nguyen Dynasty architecture.
